Do I need to obtain a Valuation of Participant’s Retirement Plan?

Submitted by on Tuesday, 27 December 2016 11:02

For a Defined Contribution Plan (401k, IRA, Savings Plan) there is dollar balance like a Savings Account that can usually be obtained from the account statement.  However, many times the Plan will not have information back to your date of separation or they will not calculate the community property, if the Participant was in the Plan prior to marriage.  In this case you may need a Valuation done by an expert.  For a Defined Benefit Plan, an expert could do a present value calculation.  However, this is only an estimate and plan balances on Defined Benefit Statements are not the present value of the Plan.
